The short version
- We never ask for your child's name, email address, phone number or location.
- Your child's voice is used only to understand what they said to Santa. Voice recordings are not stored on our servers.
- We keep the text of chats with Santa so the app works properly and so we can keep it safe and improve it.
- No ads, no selling of data, and no tracking across other companies' apps or websites.
- You can ask us to delete your family's data at any time through our contact form.
Who we are
Talk to Santa Christmas (the "app") and talktosantachristmas.com (the "website") are run by Lets Create Ltd, a company based in the United Kingdom ("we", "us"). We are the data controller for the information described in this policy. If you have any questions, please use our contact form.
Children and parents
The app is designed for young children to use with a parent or guardian nearby. We have written this policy for parents and guardians. We collect only the information the app needs to work. We do not ask children to share personal details, and we do not require an account or sign-up.
During a chat, a child may choose to say something personal, such as their first name. Because we keep the text of chats (see below), that information may be included. We use it only to provide and improve the app, and we never use it for advertising or sell it.
What we collect
1. Voice recordings. When your child presses "Talk to Santa", the app records a short clip of their voice. The clip is sent securely to be converted into text so Santa can reply. We do not store voice recordings on our servers. Recordings are handled only for this purpose by a speech-processing service provider acting on our behalf.
2. Chat text. We keep a written copy of what your child said and Santa's reply, with the date and time. We use this to run the app, keep conversations appropriate, fix problems and improve Santa's replies.
3. App and device information. To recognise the app on your device without an account, we use an identifier created for our app on your device, plus a random user ID that we generate. We also record your device's time zone (not your location), the app version and basic technical and diagnostic information, such as crash reports.
4. Cookies balance and rewards. We keep a record of your in-app cookie balance, cookies used for chats, and daily rewards such as the advent door.
5. Purchases. All purchases are made through Apple's App Store, and Apple processes the payment. We never receive your card or bank details. We receive and keep a record of what was bought (for example, which cookie pack, its price and currency, and the transaction reference) so we can add cookies to your balance and handle any problems.
6. How the app is used. We collect information about how the app is used, such as when it is opened, when Santa is spoken to, which screens are visited, and whether a purchase was started or completed. This helps us understand what works and fix problems. It is not used for advertising.
7. Notifications. If you allow notifications, we keep a notification token for your device so we can send occasional reminders, such as when a new advent door is ready. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.
8. Contact form. If you contact us through the website, we receive the name, email address and message you send, and use them only to reply to you.
This website uses analytics cookies only if you agree to them in the cookie banner. They tell us how many people visit, how they found us and which pages are useful. You can change your choice at any time using "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page. We never use advertising cookies.
How we use information
- To let your child talk to Santa and hear his replies.
- To keep track of cookies, rewards and purchases.
- To keep the app safe, appropriate and working properly, including finding and fixing problems.
- To understand how the app is used, and to improve it.
- To send notifications, if you have allowed them.
- To reply to messages you send us.
Under UK and EU data protection law, we rely on the following legal bases: providing the service you have asked for (contract); our legitimate interests in running, securing and improving the app, which we balance carefully against children's interests; and your consent, for notifications.
Who we share information with
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. We share information only with trusted service providers who help us run the app and act on our instructions under written agreements. These include providers of:
- secure cloud hosting and data storage;
- speech processing, and the technology that creates Santa's replies and voice;
- website and app analytics, crash reporting and notifications;
- in-app purchase processing (Apple, and a service that helps us manage purchases).
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of children or others.
International transfers
Some of our service providers are based outside the UK and EU, including in the United States. Where information is transferred abroad, we make sure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
How long we keep information
- Voice recordings: not stored on our servers.
- Chat text, usage and device information: for as long as the app is being used, and then deleted or fully anonymised within 12 months of the app last being used.
- Purchase records: for as long as we need them for accounting, tax and legal purposes.
- Contact form messages: for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.
Keeping information safe
Information is sent over encrypted connections and stored on secure servers with restricted access. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you or your child have the right to ask to see the information we hold, to have it corrected or deleted, to limit or object to how we use it, and to receive a copy of it. As a parent or guardian, you can make these requests for your child. Parents in the United States can ask us to review or delete their child's information, and to stop collecting it.
To make a request, please use our contact form. Because we don't use accounts, we may ask you for details from the app (such as the date of a purchase) so we can find the right information. You can also stop all collection at any time by deleting the app.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) or your local data protection authority. We would appreciate the chance to help first.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will change the "last updated" date above, and if the changes are significant we will let you know in the app or on this website.
